The Chine Illuminations
Enjoy the splendour of the Chine by day … then wonder at its mystical beauty on summer nights during the Chine Lumière when hundreds of lights illuminate the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls held within. Without doubt this is the hidden gem in the Island’s crown jewels.
At night the Chine is transformed into a place of magic and enchantment. About five miles of cable and just under 200 lights have been installed, the majority of the lights being the most modern and up-to-date available; the waterfall is illuminated by LEDs.
Please note last entry to Shanklin Chine is 9.30pm (30 minutes before closing). Also due to the natural formation of Shanklin Chine it is a weather dependent attraction and we may be forced to close during bad weather, sometimes at short notice.
times & dates
Shanklin Chine is open from Thursday 31st March.
The illuminations will be turned on at dusk until the Chine closes at 10pm.

The overall concept of the lighting is to give the impression of a cathedral roof and this has been achieved with considerable success.
One enthralled small boy was overheard saying “I am enjoying this; it’s like a nice dream – it’s like being in fairyland”.
It is worth visiting the Chine both day and evening as you will have very different and equally magical experiences.
Should the path lights fail do not worry, an emergency lighting system will switch on automatically. Due to the many pathways in the Chine it has proved impossible to hide all the light sources but improvements and additions are constantly being made.
